Making a Static Front Page for WordPress

WordPress is the most widely used content management system in the internet business world today. Against popular belief that WordPress is just for blogging, you have the option to use WordPress for just about any type site that you wish to create.  You can also use WordPress for your Affiliate Marketing page. Here is a simple method for you to set up a static front page in WordPress.

To begin you will need to log into your Admin Dashboard page.  After you have logged in just follow these simple steps to create your WordPress Static page.

1. Now you will need to go to the page section of your dashboard and create an empty page which you will name “Home”.  This is the most logical name but you have the ability to name it just about anything you wish.  This will now be your new static front WordPress page.  It is really important that you give this page a page order of zero.

2. Next you will need to create another empty page just like you did before but this time you will name this page any name that you wish to use like you did in the previous step. You will also need to remember to give this page a page order number such as ninety nine.  If the template on your site allows you to create page templates you will be able to assign your page layout in this step.  Most of these templates will automatically default to the blog themes style.

3. Your final step in creating a static WordPress home page is to go to your settings tab on your admin dashboard and activate the pages by clicking on the settings tab, then the reading category.  At the very top of this page you will choose the static page option. Once you have done that you will need to add the URL of the page that you created for your home page.  Finally after you have done all of those steps you will select the posts page and choose a title for that page as well.

If you have done all of these steps in the right order you will now have a WordPress static page on the front of your website. Also your posts will appear on the posts page. By using a static WordPress front page you will be able to update your site regularly and it will help you with higher rankings in the search engines.

Remember being high in the search engines means more traffic to your site. WordPress is a very powerful tool that is available to all business owners on the internet today to help them create all of their sites whether they are a blog or a full-fledged website.

Taking Time Out

Something that we should all do from time to time is take a little time out for ourselves. You can literally work yourself to death. Not that hard work is going to kill you in and of itself, but working too much and not getting your proper rest can leave you vulnerable to illness.

Okay… Now you are probably wondering why I am posting this type of article that is completely outside of the realm of this niche. Well… keep reading and I think you’ll understand.

You can build your business up too much. I know, you are all wanting to be rich and famous from your blog empire, but there is more to life than making money. If all of your concentration is put forth into making money from your blog, you will lose insight into why the blog was important in the first place.

Your blog should be a source of information that is freely available to anyone who visits. The money-making aspect should be secondary. If you look at your blog as a way to impart your knowledge to others, the money will follow.

Giving away free information is one of the best ways to make money. By giving away this information you become known and respected in your niche, so when it comes time to sell your readers a product, they will respect your opinion and be more apt to buy it from you. In the mean time, you can still profit from your blog through your ad networks or banners from affiliate products.

Over time you will build up many successful blogs (hopefully) in your empire. There will come a point where you don’t have enough time in the day to keep them all current and you have two choices. Either work yourself to death or farm some of that work out.

I am a control freak and at times I get to the point where I am working 20 hours a day and still not getting everything done. I have been at that point for the past couple of months or so. Too many projects and not enough time. I do have a staff, but when it comes to the actual creation of products and sites, I have to be buried to my neck in it. But this time it caught up to me…

I have been under the weather for a while trying to rid myself of bronchitis and have not been able to finish the videos for the WP Blog Master Super Course. So I am at a point (now that I am feeling better) to either put in a few 20 hour days (again) and get them done or *gasp* outsource the voice over to someone else or delay the course for a bit longer.

I have decided to put the course on hold for a couple of weeks, so that I may get fully recovered and not have to “kill myself” getting the videos done. Even if I outsourced the voice overs, it would take about that long or longer to get them done. So… I keep total control of the project and you have a healthy coach to get you moving in the right direction when we do get started.

Now back to the point…

It doesn’t hurt to give up a little control. If you are going to be extremely successful, you need to be able to let go of some things and let someone else do them for you. How can you do it?

  • Use guest bloggers to write posts for your sites (Any volunteers for a couple of IM sites?)
  • Outsource your design and graphics work (I do this… sometimes)
  • Hire someone to write articles for you (or rewrite PLR articles)
  • Use automation software (I love automated submission and research software)
  • Get an assistant (I probably need to let them do more for me)
  • Research
  • SEO

Seriously… If any of you want to be a guest blogger at some of my IM niche sites (not this one, though… sorry) go to my main support page at GaryCalvert.com and send me a message and I’ll get back to you with the details. I will provide you with a resource box and a back link to your site for each post you contribute.

For those of you who are on my mailing list, look for an email in a couple of weeks with your invitation to join the WP Blog Master Super Course for free. If you’re not on the mailing list… then I just want to know: “WHY NOT!?!” Just kidding… You should really subscribe to my list though…

I’m a bit different than most marketers, in that I do not bombard you with offers every day. You will very seldom see me pitching someone’s product in an email and, truthfully, I rarely even send e-mails to you unless I feel that it is something important. So go ahead and subscribe. If I piss you off, there is always an unsubscribe link at the bottom of each message.

Why WordPress?

I have been asked many times in the past: “Why are you such an evangelist for WordPress?”

The truth is that I’m not that big of a WordPress fan… At least not the WordPress hosted service. What I am a huge fan of is the WordPress platform as a self-hosted blog, sales system, content manager, membership site, etc… The options are limitless.

The WordPress system, hosted on your own server, gives you more flexibility than any other blog engine out there.

  • Its an easy install from cpanel for those who are not too ftp savvy.
  • There are tons of plugins to make it do what you want
  • There are literally millions of free templates out there for your site
  • Templates are easily customized
  • The learning curve for using it is short and not too steep, so even a beginner can pick it up quickly
  • There are new things being developed for it, constantly

Sure there are other options. Google’s Blogger platform is also fairly flexible and easy to use, but the options aren’t near as vast as WordPress. There are tons of free and paid sites out there that you can blog on, but none even come close to WordPress on your own server.

First off, if its on your own web host, you are in control of your content. You don’t have a site manager telling you they think that something is inappropriate and closing you down… And, usually, its not for porn or malware that they shut you down… Its for selling things from your blog!

For some reason these hosted sites don’t want you to use your blog as a sales tool very much. An occasional pitch may get by, but if you are constantly pitching products and posting affiliate links all over the place, they tend to take offense to it.

Sometimes you can get by with it for a long time. You may never get shut down. But, would you even want to take that chance? Lose all of your posts taht you worked so long on? All of your subscribers? I know… some of that can happen if you self-host.

The downsides of self-hosting your WordPress blog.

  • If you are on shared hosting, your content is moderated… so stick to clean and legal stuff
  • The server could crash… make sure someone is backing it up regularly
  • You are more vulnerable to hacker attacks, sometimes

The bottom lines is that you can use a service to host your blog and you’ll probably be alright. But, if you self-host with WordPress as your content management system, the possibilities are endless. If you have an idea for some type of function for your blog, there is probably a WordPress plugin out there to make it happen. WordPress, simply stated… Is the way to go.
